I am looking forward to 2024 and have a plan to experience more archery. The biggest news is I have ordered the new Mathew’s Title 38. Was told 10 week wait when I placed my order back in September, so fingers crossed it is ready soon. Really excited to fit and tune this bow and keeping it set up as my competition bow. I will update and make a post when it arrives and share the set up process.
I made the decision to invest and have separate competition and hunting bows in August. I thought the competition season was over and set my Mathew’s Phase 4 to 70lb draw weight and started sighting in the Gold Tip Pierce250 arrows. I soon found myself shooting at a weekly indoor 3D shoot (for fun, bragging rights and gift card), stumbled upon a close R100 and finally a September outdoor shoot. Ultimately, I was spending my range time making large adjustments versus working on my technique and form.
I will use the Phase 4 for hunting and skills courses such as TAC. I will keep it at 70lbs and will shoot the Gold Tip Pierce250 arrows. I may have to upgrade to a new sight and/or the 70lb module so I can achieve 75lbs of draw weight if I can’t comfortably and accurately land the arrows out to 110yds.
I will use the Title 38 for all competitions. Because of where I live, and I am not (yet) a sponsored semi-professional archer, my primary competitive body of rules is ASA and I will have the arrow speed dialed in at 280fps using the Gold Tip X-Cutters. I will also use this set up for R100 or similar events and any indoor events.
Moving on to my shooting plan for the year, we will start with TAC and R100. I was late to knowing about and researching TAC and R100 events in 2023. So I am watching for dates to drop and will attend 1-2 each of these.
Next, I will compete in enough Arkansas ASA qualifiers to be eligible for Shooter of the Year recognition. This is Year 2 of competitive 3D archery, and I am setting a realistic plan and goal. Yes, I want to win and will continue to practice and hone my technique to be accurate and competitive. I also know I am shooting along archers that have many more years of experience and I am doing my best to catch up to them.
Keeping the theme of ASA, I have already mapped out and plan to attend 3 of the 5 ASA Pro/Am national competitions. To me, this is more of paying for experience to become better and have fun shooting with archers from around the country.
Lastly, I have a desire to attend the Hit or Miss archery challenge (Nov 2024) and the Lancaster Classic (est. Jan 2025). These two events do have earlier dates (Nov 2023 and Jan 2024 respectively), but they are out of reach when looking at my schedule, and no competition bow.
I am open to trying other events too, skills or competitions. While I was caring for my mother in Indiana this past summer, the local archery shop (Straight Shooter Archery) hosted an indoor 3D competition every other week. It was a blast shooting with a group indoors and the variation of distances between 5-21 yards and various target sizes.
Send me a note and some details of local events like this or lesser known events that you enjoy and I will see if I can fit any into my schedule as an event or a stop while I am traveling to an event.
